Comenius Jezična asistentica
Induction meeting in Zagreb
The induction meeting of Comenius assistants in Croatia took place in Zagreb on 23rd November.
It was great to meet other Comenius assistants and share our impressions, experiences, ideas, thoughts…
First of all we learnt about Croatia: facts, foods and famous people through cultural activities that they had prepared.
The activity consisted in different news and everyone had to read the news in paper and we had to say if these news were true or false.
In my case the three news were true, I can remember what they are referring, the first new it talks about the origin of necktie, the second talks about rakija, and the latest new related to the famous skier and her brother: Janica Kostelić and Ivica Kostelić.
After this, Sanja Urek, explained us the Educational system in Croatia. I knew something about this because one day Livija explained me some questions I had.
It was wonderful have the possibility to learn from another educative system and compare with my home educative system. It’s a way to see the advantages and disadvantages of different systems and maybe improve them in a future. Later all Comenius assistants explain to the rest their home educational system. In my opinion the best presentation was about Finland educative system, it was amazing the way students learn, and all the facilities Finland government give them to make a successful knowledge. Facilities like equalities opportunities from all students, no matter their origin or social background, schools develop their own curriculum, teachers improve thoughtful concepts in students, and they are very prepared to teach at schools.
When the presentations finished, there was another presentation about implementation of Comenius assistantship. This presentation was similar like I had in Madrid. It was about our responsibilities at school, teaching about our mother tongue, about the problems we have in and outside school… In fact it was useful, because we learnt from the others and we could talk about our impressions the first days In Croatia and at school.
The last activities were referring about how to use eTwining web portal and workshop on implementing assistantship. Also interesting, entertaining and useful.
When we finished we went all together to explore Zagreb. We saw different places like St. Mark's church, The Cathedral of the Assumption, the Lower Town, Ban Josip Jelacic Square, the Mandusevac Fountain.
We spend a nice time in Zagreb and we learnt and enjoy a lot, because it was a great opportunity to meet all together and share a really good time.

Intervju
1. To begin with, did we introduce you correctly? Could you please tell us your name and surname?
My name is Elena and my surnames are Ramis Pedruelo.
In Spain is a tradition for people to have two surnames. The first father’s surname and the second is mother’s surname. And when a girl gets married she preserves her surnames.
2. What motivated you to apply for this programme and come to Croatia?
I think this is a great opportunity to learn from school, to improve my skills and it’s nice for students because they can learn another foreign language.
3. What do you do in Spain and where do you work?
I studied teaching and when I finished it two years ago, I started to teach courses in schools. Courses about Psychology, Arts…
4. How long do you plan to stay in Croatia?
For the moment I’ll stay here until march, but on December I’ll have the possibility to extend my assistantship and that’s my idea. I would like to stay here the end of school year.
5. Was it difficult for you to leave Spain?
No, because I like challenges and it’s not the first time that I left Spain.
My best experience on abroad was when I went to Central America: El Salvador.
I spent 3 months teaching literacy, Spanish and Arts programmes for children.
6. Have your colleagues provided support and have you been given any advice before your arrival?
Yes, they are all the time asking me how I feel here and they send me emails every week.
The only advice they gave me was enjoy all as you can. This is a great experience and you have to make it the most of.
7. What are your responsibilities in our school?
I teach Spanish to different students and I help in newspaper of school and sometimes I stay at Livija’s English classes.
8. Did you get a hearty welcome?
Yes, when I arrived to Osijek Livija gave me a hug and in that moment I felt very happy, and the next days I spend time in her house with her family and it was a very warm welcome to me, because they treated me very well ,like another member of their family.
At school, most of the teachers introduced themselves to me and they were very kind on me.
9. Have you had any unpleasant events?
Yes, the first I went to Osijek, I took a train from Zagreb To Osijek and then the train broke down and all the passengers had to change the train.
But at the school I didn’t have any unpleasant events.
10. Where are you staying now and are you satisfied with your accommodation?
Now, I live in Katica’s house, she is the secretary of school and there I feel very good, she treats me like another member of her family and her sons are very kind to me.
11. Can you tell us your impressions about people, food...
Croatian and Spanish people are very similar; both are Mediterranean, so that’s for why I didn’t feel a cultural contrast when I came here. The only difference I feel is the religion. Spanish people are less catholic than Croatian people.
12. Have you learned any Craotian?
Yes, I’m trying to learn Croatian. I know some words, like dobar dan, dobro jutro, laku noć, koliko košta…

Depends on the classes, sometimes I have 17 students, sometimes 3…
14. Are there any funny situations from your class than you would like to share?
Yes, In Spanish alphabet we have the sound “C” and here it’s pronounced different like /ts/ , so the first classes every time I pronounced this consonant all the students were laughing and I didn’t understand why they laugh and one day, talking with my Croatian friends they told me when somebody pronounce c /Ts/ like C /z/ , it means he or she has to go to speech therapy.
15. You have started teaching Spanish to out teachers as well. How many are there in the group and what are your impressions?
